AUTOMATED EXTRACTION FROM POINT CLOUD DATA
Vast and complex data sets can be generated by 3D terrestrial laser scanners; this data is a fantastic resource and offers a range of potential opportunities for those who interact with them.
Improvements within cloud infrastructure have realised the potential of point clouds in the cloud. Harnessing limitless data and the power of cloud computing enables the 'holy grail' of point cloud processing to be a reality.

Classification of objects is the first stage in breaking down the complexity of a large point cloud data set.
Having the ability to separate small subset elements from within the larger point cloud will enable items to be categorised, counted, and attributed.
With the VERCATOR cloud classification service you will be able to specify the object you wish to search for e.g. a road sign or a chair etc, the point cloud will be analysed and the objects logged into a database.
VISUALISATION & ANIMATION
Increasingly point cloud data is colourised using HD photography acquired onsite. The photographs can be perfectly overlain to the pointcloud; the RGB value is applied directly to the corresponding 3D point; producing a 'pixel perfect' fully colourised cloud.
With the VERCATOR visualisation service you will be able to view the scene from each scan location, transition or walk between scan locations, take discrete measurements, and create animated fly-throughs through the whole point cloud. You will have the facility to add 'notes' to objects/fenced areas within the cloud also.
The classification of smaller subsets from within the larger point cloud will enable items to be categorised. Once the subset divisions have been made, model geometry can where possible be applied. A surface triangulation mesh will be generated which can then be created into a solid surface.
With the VERCATOR object extraction service you will be able to extract out initially key primitives e.g. surfaces (floors, walls, and ceilings), pipes, steel members. This will extend eventually to enable all classified objects required to be modelled.

Point clouds have long been thought of as 'too large' to be stored and shared from the cloud. However, with digital infrastructure improvements this simply isn't the case.
